Blood Gas Analyzer

PropertiesDetails
SFDA ClassificationClass ii *

FDA Classification
Purpose of UseAnalyzers are used to measure blood gases, pH, electrolytes, and certain metabolites in whole blood samples. In addition to measuring pH, partial pressure of carbon dioxide, oxygen, and concentrations of many ions (sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate) and metabolites (calcium, magnesium, glucose, and lactate). It is also used to determine the levels of metabolites and/or abnormal impurities in the blood, the acid-base balance of the patient, and the levels of oxygen/carbon dioxide exchange.

Work Location & End-UserWork Location: laboratories, operating rooms

End User: Clinical Laboratory Specialist, Anesthesiologist
Parts & AccessoriesMain parts:
• Sample input port
• Gas Calibration Bank and Detector
• Wash and rinse the bank

Inner parts:
• Consists of three electrodes that measure pH, PCO2 and PO2
on a 37°C water bath.
• Internal computers
• The CO-oximeter, is a device that measures the oxygen carrying status of hemoglobin in a blood sample, including oxygen-carrying hemoglobin, non-oxygen-carrying hemoglobin but normal hemoglobin, as well as dyshemoglobin such as carboxyhemoglobin and methemoglobin.
OperationBlood gas/pH analyzers use electrodes to determine pH, partial pressure of carbon dioxide, and partial pressure of oxygen in the blood. Chemistry analyzers use a dry reagent pad system in which a filter pad impregnated with all reagents required for a particular reaction is placed on a thin plastic strip. Electrolyte analyzers use ion-selective electrode (ISE) methodology in which measurements of the ion activity in the solution are made potentiometrically using an external reference electrode and an ISE containing an internal reference electrode

Common Problems• Spelling error in sample name, sample mixed
• Improper handling of PT
• Bad calibration of single electrode
• Expiry or instability of the membrane or electrode
• A clot in the blood gas system
Reference electrode problem
• CO-oximetry unit problem
• Equipment malfunction (leakage, fluid sensor errors, etc.)
