Soft robotic sleeve for lymphedema treatment

Researchers at the University of Waterloo in Canada have created a soft robotic sleeve to treat lymphedema.  

Lymphedema involves the accumulation of fluid in the tissues due to damage to the lymph system. This wearable sleeve combines a microfluidic controller with soft robot components that apply pressure to the arm, to reduce and control fluid buildup. 

 Small components avoid the need for a static pump to inflate the sleeve and allow for unrestricted use during normal activities.

Lymphedema most often affects breast cancer patients, who often require surgical removal of the lymph nodes in the armpit. This can cause fluid to build up in the arm, which can cause significant swelling.

  Currently, pressure sleeves can be used to treat this condition, but frequent use of these devices usually requires a stationary pump to inflate the sleeves. This bulky equipment is usually expensive and also impractical to use for long periods because it requires the user to sit in one place during use.
